What to Watch for at VMworld 2017

August 24

VMworld 2017 is right around the corner! Since 2004, the event has attracted attendees the world over to network and discuss the latest trends in virtualization, cloud computing, and beyond. Whether you’re personally attending or keeping up via social media, you’ll find more than a handful of sights and sessions that warrant checking out.

Application Virtualization, Bootcamp Style – August 26

The 2017 edition of VMworld will once again welcome Customer Bootcamps, an in-depth training program designed to help vSphere users make the most of application virtualization. The first two bootcamp sessions target the essentials of running Oracle and SQL Server implementations of vSphere. Course attendees will be schooled on the best practices of deploying, configuring, and managing Oracle and Microsoft database applications across the vSphere infrastructure. The third and final bootcamp session is a more advanced course on the performance, tuning, and troubleshooting aspects of vSphere.

Instructors from VMware and Microsoft will be joined by other industry experts to deliver live training demonstrations that help organizations take their IT skills to the next level. These sessions are offered as an optional add-on during registration and require you to bring your own WiFi-ready laptop

Early Bird Discussions – August 27

VMworld 2017 is introducing a number of new activities to the attendees. Among them is the slate of industry-specific workshops set to kick-off the event. The pre-conference sessions will take place throughout half of Sunday and focus on sectors such as healthcare, financial services, retail, and government. Those who attend can expect to learn more about the trends, opportunities, and challenges that pertain to their particular vertical. Featuring a combination of keynote speakers, demos, and insightful discussions, I wouldn’t be surprised if these sessions make a return next year.

VMware 2017

VMware on the Nonvolatile Memory Revolution – August 28

SSDs are all the rage. But despite the huge performance boost, they are hindered by many of the same problems that plague traditional spinning disks. Latency, disk errors, and other I/O-related issues present challenges when writing data to SSDs. Leveraging a concept known as storage class memory (SCM), non-volatile memory (NVM) devices not only are faster, but provide a layer of persistent memory that makes them ideal for storage.

Rajesh Venkatasubramanian and Richard Brunner of VMware will be presenting “Storage at Memory Speed: Finally, Nonvolatile Memory is Here” at VMworld 2017. If you’re new to this topic or still wondering why NVM is being hailed as the future of storage, then this is a session you can’t miss!

Industry-specific Compliance Best Practices – August 29

Whether you operate in government, finance, or hospitality, there’s no escaping the long arm of compliance. In the breakout session “Data Privacy, the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), and the Globalization of Compliance”, IT experts from VMware will lead a panel discussion on the challenges and often overlooked opportunities of the compliance environment. Topics will include prepping for mandates such as the GDPR and identifying the increasingly crowded intersection between IT and data privacy. Compliance has been a hot topic in the Recovery Zone lately, so I think this session might be worth checking out.

How to Build the Ultimate Hybrid Cloud – August 30

The hybrid approach is widely viewed as the perfect compromise between public and private clouds. Although the benefits are potentially immeasurable, the challenges are very real. Hugo Patterson, CTO and Co-founder of Datrium, will head up “Beyond Hyperconvergence: Building Out Your Hybrid Cloud”. From maximizing scalability to avoiding vendor lock-in, this breakout session will focus on finding balance between the advantages and disadvantages of this fast-growing trend.

Cool Kids in the Hall – (all weekend!)

Housed in the Solutions Exchange, the Hall Crawl is made for the socialite in you. Here’s your chance to rub elbows with exhibitors, sponsors, and the elite of the IT industry. You’ll also find contests, product demonstrations, snacks, beverages, and giveaways. I mean who doesn’t like free swag? Not hard to see why this is among the hottest activities every year. The Hall Crawl is open to all attendees and a great opportunity for networking aficionados.

Concert for Customers – August 30

VMworld knows how to throw a party, and this year’s event will showcase quite a few, including The Customer Appreciation Party. Coming at you from the T-Mobile Arena, this gathering will bring attendees together for an incredible night of food, drinks, and great music. VMware managed to score two of the hottest bands in modern day music as Blink 182 and Bleachers will be performing live on stage. The Customer Appreciation Party is free for everyone who has full conference access.

VMworld 2017 takes place August 27 – August 31 at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nev. StorageCraft will also be there (at Booth #1713), so if you’re in attendance, stop by and say hi, or follow us on social media for updates from the show floor.
