Testing 1-2-3

Testing 1-2-3

January 2

The New Year is upon us, and you know what that means. It means that all of those resolutions to finally upgrade servers, workstations and laptops are knocking at your doorstep. Are you ready?

Several of our customers have mentioned using StorageCraft’s ShadowProtect software to test upgrades without risking production systems. In other words they’re upgrading software, changing configurations and settings, and installing new applications, all without facing the inherent risk of changing the production environment. How is this accomplished?

We all know the adage: “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” but being human we like to tinker, constantly looking for ways to improve upon the existing architecture or make processes more efficient and automated. Often this involves a dedicated “sandbox” of equipment and licensed software. However not all of us have the luxury of owning extra equipment that isn’t already put to some daily use.

Here’s where StorageCraft’s ShadowProtect comes in. Because of ShadowProtect’s recover-ability solution a virtual test environment is right at your fingertips. Simply spin up a virtual machine (VM) from the backup chain of an existing machine and you can test to your heart’s content. The VirtualBoot tool makes this a fast and easy process, recreating an exact copy of your existing machine with all of the installed applications, services, and existing data exactly like they were in production. This means that you can test that software upgrade or configuration change and see exactly whether your tinkering would improve your existing environment. If it does, great! And even if it doesn’t, you can always destroy the VM and start over with your next tinkering to-do-list item.
