Success Story: Putting Humpty Dumpty Back Together

February 7

“Nothing sells recovery and our data center better than what just happened,” says Sean Furman, president of STF Consulting in Atlantic Highlands, NJ.

“I just finished putting Humpty Dumpty back together.”

Since Hurricane Sandy laid waste to the Jersey Shore and Lower Manhattan, Sean’s been busy. A StorageCraft partner for more than five years, he decided last year to build an end-to-end, 100 percent native StorageCraft solution—from backup to data center to recovery services.

Here’s how Sean did it:

  • We leverage Dell Poweredge R510 Servers for storage at the data center.
  • Each server has 12 x 3TB Near Line SAS Disks and 32GB of RAM.
  • We set up the disks in a RAID 6 configuration which yields about 26TB of storage per server.
  • Use ShadowStream (a feature of StorageCraft ImageManager) to get data to the data center.
  • We have 100MBits of bandwidth.
  • We rate limit inbound traffic for ShadowStream to protect our bandwidth in the data center.
  • We lock down inbound ShadowStream connections to only our client base.

“I control the whole thing, 360 degrees, and we’re able to achieve incredible recovery times,” he says.

Though Sean’s office was out of electricity for a week, and some of his clients lost power for two weeks or more, no one lost data from hurricane damage.

“Some clients who had been down for two weeks had given up hope. They weren’t able to get to their offices with the flooding and road closures,” he recalls. “Because of our remote monitoring tools, we were able to let them know when their power was restored, and that their data was safe.”

Sean can’t say enough about the quality and dependability of StorageCraft products in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

“Because I replicate my own data in my own data center, if I just need, data I can mount an image and do whatever I want with it, or virtualize it,” he says. “It’s so incredibly powerful! The speed and flexibility of ShadowProtect Server and StorageCraft ImageManager are just unparalleled. It sounds too good to be true, but it’s the gods-honest truth.”
