ZDNet contributor Howard Lo recently highlighted the advantages of cloud computing, including in these two areas. The writer explained that there are many vendors out there for small businesses looking for inexpensive and automated cloud deployments. The cloud is ideal for protecting companies against hardware failures because firms can still access their most important documents since they are stored online.
One of the other benefits of cloud-based solutions is that small businesses can improve employee productivity. Lo noted that if a staff member starts working on a document in the office, he or she can finish the project at another location. Employees can also use multiple devices to access content stored in the cloud and share files with colleagues more easily.
SMBs believe in the cloud, other technologies
Small and medium-sized businesses appear to be listening to industry pundits regarding the use of the cloud. Spiceworks recently conducted a survey of nearly 1,400 IT professionals from SMBs worldwide and found that more than 60 percent are currently using cloud-based solutions. Since last year, this figure has expanded 35 percent. Another 73 percent of respondents said they expect their firms to leverage hosted environments during the first half of 2013.
Spiceworks noted that some of the most popular uses of the cloud are for data backup, recovery, email, and web hosting services.
In addition to migrating to the cloud, SMBs are adopting more technologies in general. Overall, the average annual budget of those polled stands at $162,000, according to Spiceworks.
“The world’s SMBs continue to increase their investment in new technologies, including tablet devices, smartphones, cloud services, and virtualization,” said Spiceworks Co-Founder and Marketing Vice President Jay Hallberg. “The results of our research bode well for the industry as new technologies become more pervasive and prompt IT departments to make additional investments.”
Companies of all sizes can enjoy the advantage of cloud computing, whether firms need more storage capacity, data backup services, or to lower operating costs.
