The IT industry is becoming more agile thanks to Internet-connected technologies like cloud computing and mobile solutions, including smartphones, tablets and notebook PCs. Businesses supporting the cloud and these powerful gadgets can improve worker satisfaction by allowing them to use their own personal devices to access corporate content anywhere, regardless of location.
The use of smartphones, tablets and PCs will likely remain an IT staple for years to come, according to a recent Gartner report. The research firm said that global shipments of these devices will total roughly 2.4 billion units in 2013, growing 6 percent from last year. Although PC shipments are declining, mobile phones and tablets are becoming even more popular worldwide.
“Consumers want anytime-anywhere computing that allows them to consume and create content with ease, but also share and access that content from a different portfolio of products,” explained Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner. “Mobility is paramount in both mature and emerging markets.”
Organizations that want to avoid prolonged periods of downtime and lapses in productivity due to natural disasters can benefit greatly from the pairing of the cloud and mobile solutions. Since hosted environments are available through the Internet, staff members using their PCs, tablets and smartphones can always access work-related documents following major disruptions, even if they cannot work from the office.
Smartphones becoming norm in mobile industry
The evolution of smartphones has been significant in recent years, especially in terms of replacing older feature phones that offer users limited functionality. The IT industry will likely continue to be influenced greatly by these small yet powerful gadgets for the foreseeable future.
An IDC report said that global smartphone shipments are expected to total approximately 959 million units in 2013, growing 33 percent year over year. This year will also be the first time that smartphones exceed shipments of feature phones, accounting for 52 percent of the overall market.
IDC also said that emerging markets will play a significant role in the growing popularity of smartphones. As of this year, these regions will be responsible for nearly two-thirds of all smartphone shipments.
The IT industry will always be creating and supporting the very latest technological developments. It appears that smartphones and other powerful mobile solutions will be major drivers for the tech sector for some time.
