Several BDR platforms are available for enterprises to use with their own architecture. There are several “cloud‐only” backup solutions ‐‐ and these are excellent file backup solutions ‐‐ but when a local hardware failure occurs, clients who go cloud‐only are waiting a long time for entire volumes or servers to stream back to the on‐premises server. At one time data was backed up on tape or disk, creating the need for expanding office space. The idea of physically moving media from one location to a backup site has shifted toward more efficient methods of moving data across a wide area network (WAN) to a backup site with no need for a delivery person. Bandwidth, hardware and software have all evolved. Today, backup providers can offer continuous backup protection at lower costs than a decade ago.

In a report published by, the DRaaS market will be worth nearly $12 billion by 2020. One of the trends leading into this projection is that many small and large businesses are not well prepared for disasters. The market has profited from the trend toward the cloud‐based business model. The providers that protect access to data with minimal downtime are the most competitive.

Gartner Group projects DRaaS spending in the United States will grow to $1.2 billion by 2017, which translates into an over 20% growth rate. An even more optimistic projection by TechNavio is that the market will grow by over 50% through 2018. There will be yet more opportunity to thrive in the disaster recovery business.
