Case Study: Getting the Best of Both Worlds

Case Study: Getting the Best of Both Worlds

April 3

While all companies strive to be the best, rivals often produce great products with similar features.

Unfortunately, not all companies consider support a feature. Some might leave you high and dry when you really need help.

You should never have to pick between a great product and great support—especially when you’re talking about something as critical as client data. Your job is to take care of your customers in the best ways possible, and that leaves little room for compromise when it comes to the people you choose to work with.

After all, you’re only as good as the company you keep.

Just as good companies work to find that balance between product and support, they have to balance things internally between technical and business perspectives as well.

That’s why Todd Crystal and Dominic Valois at Spencomp Solutions make such a great team.

Todd is the president and owner and Dominic is the senior security specialist (but Todd calls him the “chief genius officer”). Todd has over fifteen years of experience in IT and has been in sales all his life.

Dominic has been in IT for eighteen years with experience ranging from IT infrastructure management to backup and disaster recovery. Together, they’re a formidable duo with over thirty years of experience and a skill set that runs the gamut.

Their working relationship was going great, but this duo had a problem.

They needed a great backup and disaster recovery software solution, but they also needed a vendor they could work with to help them with implementation and support. They needed a partner that worked as well with them as they worked together.

Spencomp knew what they needed, but they learned quickly that it’s not always easy to find what you’re looking for. A technology expert needs great technology solutions, and a business professional wants quality support and beneficial relationships. You should never have to settle for one or the other, but it can be tough to find both.

After a lot of trial and error (and trouble with multiple products), they were finally introduced to the StorageCraft® Recover-Ability™ solution.

Solving Problems

It all started with the value Spencomp found in StorageCraft technology.

As Dominic puts it,

Over the years, we implemented many disaster recovery solutions, but none met our requirements in the long run. StorageCraft is what Spencomp was looking for in terms of reliability and flexibility. We use the IT edition [of StorageCraft® ShadowProtect®]. It’s a great product. We’ve been able to back up and restore physical machines and it allows us to restore P2V. We can virtualize a backup and it’s great for migrating over to different platforms. It’s a lot of help to us, but more importantly, to our customers.

But it didn’t stop there. Todd explained that they needed more than just reliable backups, they also needed a place to put them and a way to get them there.

We were having problems with our other backup and disaster recovery solutions so we decided to go our own route and use our own hardware built around the StorageCraft solution.

According to Dominic, Spencomp got to work and eventually put together the solution they needed.

A little more than two years ago we invested in servers, SANs, dual firewalls, and an SSL access appliance to a collocation facility to start our own DR site. We tried many other solutions for backing up customer’s data and moving it offsite, but none of those solutions worked really well.

Dominic found that ShadowProtect and StorageCraft® ImageManager, both pieces of the StorageCraft Recover-Ability solution, were critical in the implementation of their disaster recovery solution as it allowed them to replicate client backups to the disaster recovery site quickly, easily, and safely.

StorageCraft addressed our issues with StorageCraft ImageManager and their StorageCraft® ShadowStream® technology, which is now the only solution we use to seamlessly transfer a safe copy of our customer’s data. The copies allow us to recover data or entire servers in the event that a site goes down. We also have the possibility to virtualize their environment and give them access remotely through the use of an SSL-encrypted connection.

Being Covered from End to End

While a great product is essential to any business, quality products and useful technology are only half of what makes a business great.

While Dominic is a fan of the software solutions, Todd loves the men and women who create them.

StorageCraft is a wonderful company to work with. Everybody involved is helpful and willing to grow our partnership together…In the end, it’s more about loyalty. We like the products, we like the people behind them, and that’s why we deal with StorageCraft.

In a world where businesses can seem the same to end-users or casual IT admins, the real difference is easily the quality of the relationship. As Todd’s puts it,

The big win for StorageCraft is the people behind the product and company. You’re only as strong as your weakest link and if your weakest link is your rep or support staff, it doesn’t matter how good your product is.

It’s nice when everyone gets along.

Spencomp uses StorageCraft as their primary backup and disaster recovery solution in conjunction with a disaster recovery site to handle offsite backups of client data for emergency recovery. They also lean on StorageCraft staff to help them out with questions, implementation, and even marketing needs.

Having an end-to-end backup and disaster recovery solution doesn’t stop at the products and people. That’s why StorageCraft believes in partner enablement and strives to give partners all the resources they need to succeed as solution providers.

As Spencomp can attest, StorageCraft offers a robust arsenal of marketing, sales, and technical material to provide our partners with more than just software and tech support, it’s a full end-to-end solution. Being a StorageCraft partner really pays.
