Businesses that only update disaster protocols and test data backups infrequently may experience even longer periods of downtime should a major disruption impact their operations. A recent report by the Remark Group encouraged companies to consistently update their backup processes to avoid complications in the future.
“Companies will often set their computer systems to backup, but they rarely check to ensure the data has backed up correctly,” said Dave Lyons, IT director at the Remark Group. “In instances where files become corrupt or simply do not work, this can be disastrous as many documents are unsalvageable even using sophisticated recovery tools.”
Companies that want to receive consistent support for their data backups may want to consider focusing less on on-site devices that require a manual approach in favor of cloud backup, which is maintained by vendors. This allows staff members to spend more time on remaining productive during disasters and less on restoring operations.
The cloud is also ideal for its scalability, allowing organizations to add or subtract computing power or storage capacity when needed. This also ensures that costs are always kept in check so resources are never wasted, as opposed to on-site IT systems that require an upfront capital investment, regardless of whether they are ever used to their full capabilities or not.
As more organizations realize the benefits of cloud computing, not only for disaster recovery purposes, but its other functions, companies that fail to adopt the technology may find themselves struggling to keep pace with competitors leveraging hosted environments. It is becoming evident that firms are growing more comfortable with the idea of migrating mission-critical data and applications to the cloud, whereas before some questioned the security of the solution.
